ASTRAL BREW “Red Soil”

Astral Brew is a jazz-rock trio from Vittorio Veneto (northern Italy), with Riccardo Mazza on alto sax and keyboards, Michele Dall'Arche on electric bass and Daniele De Vecchi on drums.

The three have previously played in bands such as Orfanado (Holidays / Sound of Cobra), A Flower Kollapsed (Shove / Macina Dischi), Superlucertulas (8mm Records / Robotradio Records) and got together in 2013 with the intent of playing improv.

After a first, self-produced record entitled “I” in April 2015, they arrived at Macina Dischi with "Red Soil", out on 30 April 2018.

The record develops as a concept album on space travel, seen as a metaphor of the desire to escape the misery of contemporary life.
In this sense, if the reassuring rumble of Next makes us think of the tight cabin of a spaceship about to take off, the melancholic candor of Space Solitude takes us to remote, silent places that we have visited only when dreaming.
From a a more strictly musical standpoint, the three recover characteristics of acoustic modal jazz and transform them into the electric tension of funk-rock grooves, kraut obsessions and free-jazz deconstructions.
The progressive rock origins, more evident on the first album, remain -at least in part- in the group's rhythms: the complex bass riffs that entwine with the tight drum contstructs create delicate geometries on which the sax can only scream to emerge, like the helpless astronaut in the immense, silent space.

Gli Astral Brew sono un trio jazz-rock di Vittorio Veneto.
Riccardo Mazza suona il sax alto e le tastiere, Michele Dall'Arche il basso elettrico e Daniele De Vecchi la batteria.

I tre hanno militato in band quali Orfanado (Holidays / Sound of Cobra), A Flower Kollapsed (Shove / Macina Dischi), Superlucertulas (8mm Records / Robotradio Records) e si trovano nel 2013 con il desiderio di suonare musica improvvisata.

Dopo un primo disco autoprodotto dal titolo "I" ad aprile del 2015, approdano su Macina Dischi con "Red Soil" in uscita il 30 aprile 2018.

Il disco si dipana come un concept album sul viaggio spaziale quale metafora del desiderio di evasione dalla miseria del vivere contemporaneo.
In tal senso se il fragore rassicurante di Next ci fa pensare allo stretto abitacolo di una navicella che sta per decollare, il malinconico candore di Space Solitude ci fa ricordare i luoghi silenziosi e remoti che abbiamo potuto visitare solo in sogno.
Da un punto di vista più strettamente musicale i tre recuperano stilemi del jazz modale acustico e li trasfigurano nella tensione elettrica di grooves funk-rock, in ossessioni kraut e destrutturazioni free-jazz.
La matrice rock progressiva piú evidente sul primo lavoro rimane, almeno a tratti, nell'impianto ritmico del gruppo: i complessi giri di basso che si incastrano con serrati costrutti di batteria generano le delicate geometrie sulle quali il sassofono può solo urlare per emergere, come fa l'astronauta inerme nell'immenso spazio silenzioso.
